Amanda's Senior Adventure (Kodiak to Anchorage)

06/27/2008 We traveled all day and night Whittier to Kodiak Island. We arrived early in the morning and walked into town to rent a car. We traveled around the island and put on 150 miles. We drove on every “major” road except for one that day. We went and saw old gun placements for WW II on one end of the island and a state (Alaska) owned rocket launch site on the south end. Kodiak, as most of Alaska, appears to be one of those places where it is much better seen off of the road. It was a beautiful ride, but the only interesting wildlife we saw was a pod whales off of the coast on the Alaskan buffalo. No bears to be seen.
We boarded back on the boat for dinner and left port at 7:00pm for an all night sail to our final destination, Homer. We arrived in the morning on the Homer Spit. This is about a 5 mile long peninsula off of Homer. We had breakfast with Nick and then I took Amanda hitchhiking to our motel. It was easy to get a ride this way as we did it three times that day. Before we caught our ride, we scheduled up a trip to go sea kayaking. We checked into the motel. This was a recommendation as we could not get into the local hostel. It was “European” style. This was having a bedroom, but sharing bathrooms on the floor. After laundry, we headed back out to the end of the spit for lunch and taking a boat ride across the bay for some sea kayaking. We were informed that it would be best for us to share a kayak as we were interested in taking out singles. We had a good time paddling around for a couple of hours. We saw many star fish along the rocks, a sea otter and a seal hanging out on a dock. We then had a fish dinner on the spit, another hitchhike trip to the motel and watched TV for the first time in almost two weeks. Next morning our ride to Anchorage picked us up in front of the motel. It was a 17 person van pulling a trailer for luggage. It was a four hour drive and we dropped off at the airport. From there we flew back to Seattle to make the next drive onto Yellowstone National Park.
